A young GC Am Reichswald Nuernberg team played solid golf on the 1st day of the 2011 BAVARIAN TEAM CUP Championship to reach the semi-finals of the prestigious 3-day competition, but lost decisively to GC Feldafing on day 2 to miss the finals, and subsequently to GC Muenchen Eichenried to determine 3rd and 4th place.

The tournament, which features a mixture of individual and foursome stroke- and match-play over three days, was organized by the BGV - Bayerischer Golfverband. The fabulous Golfclub Oberfranken in Thurnau - www.gc-oberfranken.de hosted the 2011 event.

Eight teams qualified with GC Augsburg, GC Feldafing, GC&L Holledau, GC Muenchen-Eichenried, Muenchener GC, GC Am Reichswald Nuernberg, G&LC Regensburg and GC Bad Woerishofen.

Julian Hacker, captain of the Reichswald team, couragously fielded on day one three fifteen-year-olds in addition to Nuernberg stalwarts Joerg Paulus and Gordian Curtius-Seutter von Loetzen, as well as Simon Taylor and Ferdinand Velte. Paulus and von Loetzen submitted solid results with 1-over and even-par performances, while the latter turned in scores of 6 and 7-over par.

All three young guns proved their worth.

Keanu Jahns once again underlined his potential by firing 5 birdies on the well-manicured greens of GC Oberfranken, but also collected a double-bogey on the par-5 #3 and a few bogeys to submit a yet respectable score of 1-under par 71. Timothy Rauth and Matthias Wuerzinger likewise contributed to Reichswald's securing a 2012 appearance in the 1st Bavarian Division, with 3-over par 75 and 6-over par 78.

In the meantime, Jonas Koelbing of GC Feldafing bazookad a fabulous 8-under par 64 to take the best round of day one stroke-play. Koelbing inspired with powerful tee-shots to negotiate par-4's and 5's in one and two on, resulting in a seemingly endless string of birdies.

Day 2 saw Muenchener GC square off with GC Muenchen-Eichenried, while GC Am Reichswald faced Koelbing's Feldafing for a place in the finals. In 4 match-plays of foursomes and 8 single match-plays, Muenchener GC overcame Eichenried with 7:5 points, while Reichswald's youths succumbed to the experience of Feldafing 3:9.

The 3rd and final day of the championship saw Muenchener GC win over Koelbing's GC Feldafing to take the 2011 BAVARIAN TEAM CUP. 3rd & 4th Place went to GC Muenchen-Eichenried and GC Am Reichswald Nuernberg, respectively. GC Augsburg  and G&LC Regensburg both dispatched Bad Woerishofen and GC Holledau to remain in the 1st Bavarian Division, while the latter will play 2nd class in 2012.

Reichswald team members under the guidance of their captain Julian Hacker included (from left to right): Mark Ludwig, Frederic Ammon, Gordian von Loetzen, Simon Taylor, Keanu Jahns, Timothy Rauth, Ferdinand Velte, Matthias Wuerzinger, Leon-Linus Molina, Captain Julian Hacker, Joerg Paulus and Gary Dunne.

Not on the picture, but very much part of the Reichswald team, is Marc-André Gehr, who lost his grandfather earlier in the week. Grandpa Gehr had introduced Marc-André to golf some years ago. After laying his grandfather to rest, Marc-André re-joined the team on the weekend and won his singles match-play against GC Muenchen-Eichenried in style, while drilling a fifteen-footer for Opa on the 18th green.

Congratulations go to Muenchener GC and their head coach Martin Hoecker. In the meantime, the young guns of GC Am Reichswald Nuernberg have every reason to keep their heads up. It seems the future may be yours...
